The Metropolitan Police is investigating a video that has gone viral, showing an officer advising Nigerian women in the UK not to report their husbands for domestic issues. The video has sparked outrage from a children’s safeguarding group, Afruca, who expressed concerns that it could promote domestic violence. The officer was recorded speaking to a group of Nigerian women at a church event in 2018, advising them to focus on their children and handle domestic matters at home. Afruca’s Chief Executive, Debbie Ariyo, criticized the video, stating that it could silence victims of abuse and discourage them from seeking help from the police. Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh confirmed that the video is under review by the professional standards team. Adjei-Addoh clarified that the officer’s remarks do not reflect the stance of the Metropolitan Police, emphasizing that abuse is not tolerated in British society.
