Nigerian Blockchain Association SiBAN rocked by power tussle, expels president and executives

In recent developments within the Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria (SiBAN), there is a dispute between the association’s leadership and its current president, Obinna Iwunno. The conflict arose following the expulsion of Iwunno, along with several other association executives, due to disagreements over company registration issues.

The board of trustees of SiBAN raised concerns about Iwunno and the other executives naming themselves as “The Registered Trustees of SiBAN” in a company filing, which they deemed fraudulent. Allegations of financial mismanagement and unauthorized actions by Iwunno were also brought to light, leading to his expulsion.

An investigation into the claims against Iwunno revealed attempts to withdraw SiBAN from the Blockchain Industry Coordinating Committee of Nigeria (BiCCON) without proper internal procedures. Additionally, accusations of mishandling company funds and unauthorized actions were made against Iwunno, which he denies.

The situation escalated further as the board of trustees revoked Iwunno’s administrative access to SiBAN’s platforms and initiated efforts to recover the database of member information. Both parties involved have differing perspectives on the legitimacy of the board of trustees and the actions taken against Iwunno.

As the conflict unfolds, there is a risk that it could impact SiBAN’s reputation and potentially disrupt its advocacy efforts within the blockchain community in Nigeria. The outcome of this internal struggle will likely shape the future direction of the association and its role in promoting blockchain technology in the country.
