The recent actions by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors have sparked controversy after the Federal Government threatened to deduct seven days’ pay from the doctors’ salaries due to a strike in support of their kidnapped colleague. The doctors, however, remain steadfast in their cause and are undeterred by the government’s warning.
The strike was initiated to demand the rescue of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted nearly nine months ago at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna. Despite the government’s declaration of intent to deduct salaries, the doctors are resolute in their mission to secure their colleague’s safe return.
Dr. Kefas Wida, a prominent figure in NARD, emphasized the importance of their colleague’s life over financial concerns, stating, “The life of our colleague is more significant than any monetary sacrifice. We are committed to ensuring her safe return, regardless of any deductions from our salaries.”
Wida reaffirmed the association’s unwavering stance on the issue, declaring their readiness to persist in their demands despite government threats. The doctors remain dedicated to their cause and prioritize the well-being of their kidnapped colleague above all else.
