President Bola Tinubu has expressed his dedication to supporting the National Identity Management Commission in enhancing a robust digital identity system, highlighting that every Nigerian’s distinct proof of identity is vital for their protection, sustenance, and inclusion in society, irrespective of their location.
The number of Nigerians with National Identification Numbers has now risen to 110 million, showcasing a 2.39% increase from the previous count in May 2024.
Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, delivered these remarks at the National Day of Identity event organized by the National Identity Management Commission in Abuja. The event focused on the theme “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services.”
The National Day of Identity is a platform where stakeholders come together to acknowledge the fundamental right of every Nigerian citizen to possess a verifiable proof of identity.
Tinubu highlighted that the administration’s Renewed Hope initiative aims to promote sustainable development and enhance the living standards of all Nigerians.
He emphasized the significance of a robust digital identity system in the current digital era, connecting it to various government initiatives such as food security, poverty alleviation, economic growth, job creation, and more.
The Director-General of the Commission, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, commended Nigeria’s progress towards harmonizing its digital identity, attributing it to the strategic planning of the NIMC management. She underscored the role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in Nigeria’s economic advancement, linking citizens to vital services like healthcare, education, and financial inclusion.
Coker-Odusote also highlighted the role of DPI in facilitating digital payments, digital money, and digital processes, benefiting government programs and financial institutions. The Student Loan Initiative was cited as an example of how DPI can remove financial barriers to education.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the importance of the digital identity system in enabling Nigerians to engage in government programs and access associated benefits. He recognized the system as crucial for the country’s social and economic development.
