FCT sets up ad-hoc committee on tremors preparedness

The Emergency Management Department of the Federal Capital Territory has established a special Committee on Emergency Preparedness to educate residents on how to respond to tremors. This decision follows recent tremors experienced in parts of Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama. The agency assured residents that the tremors were minor and did not present any danger.

The Acting Director General of the department emphasized that there was no evidence of rock movement despite the tremors. The committee will focus on raising awareness among residents about the necessary actions to take during and after tremors.

Officials explained that stress on underground fault lines was causing the tremors and predicted that they might continue. Suggestions were made to install seismic substations at strategic locations to monitor such activities effectively.

A consultant mentioned that human activities, particularly rock blasting, might have contributed to the tremors. Quarry activities in the area were advised to be temporarily halted to assess the situation.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency confirmed the tremors but reassured residents that they were not a significant threat. The agency urged people in affected areas to evacuate buildings during tremors and to avoid electric poles for safety.
