Damagum: Four govs back Wike’s support for PDP chair

The ongoing crisis within the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shows no sign of resolution as the internal discord over the replacement of its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, intensifies, particularly within the PDP Governors’ Forum.

A member of the PDP National Working Committee, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that Damagum, with backing from Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and four governors, is facing resistance from a group of seven PDP governors seeking his removal.

The governors leading the charge against Damagum, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, have been vocal in their opposition to his continued role as acting National Chairman.

The situation further escalated due to disagreements over the handling of party matters, such as the Rivers State PDP Congresses and the postponement of the National Executive Committee meeting.

Tensions have risen between Wike and other party members, with public statements and threats exchanged, creating a complex political landscape within the PDP.

Various governors have taken sides, either supporting Damagum’s leadership or advocating for his replacement, leading to a fractured party structure.

Discussions and meetings among key party figures, such as the PDP Board of Trustees and the National Assembly Caucus, aim to address the internal challenges and find a way forward for the party.
