The representative for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the 10th Assembly, Senator Ekong Sampson, has expressed concern over the declining reading habits among students in Nigeria, citing it as a significant issue in the country.
Senator Sampson has initiated a practice of celebrating his birthday with students from schools in his constituency. During these celebrations, he interacts with the students, teaching them different subjects and offering assistance to schools in need.
During his 58th birthday celebration at Regina Coeliac Secondary School, Senator Sampson emphasized the importance of reading for the students’ future success. He encouraged them to cultivate a habit of reading to enhance their chances of becoming successful scholars and leaders, highlighting the critical role reading plays in personal and societal development.
As the Senate Committee chairman on Solid Minerals and Vice chairman of the Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Sampson reiterated his commitment to advancing education in his constituency. He mentioned sponsoring bills to support the establishment of Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, and the Federal University of Medical Sciences in Eket, emphasizing the importance of educational institutions in the region.
Senator Sampson also announced a donation of N1m to the school and pledged to undertake an electrification project for the institution. Dr. Udeme Nana, the Convener of Uyo Book Club, praised the senator’s initiative of engaging with students during his birthdays and urged the students to prioritize reading for academic excellence and future success.
The event included a spelling dictation activity by the senator, with students winning cash prizes and receiving exercise books and blackboards. This event aimed to motivate students to embrace reading as a key to unlocking academic achievement and a successful future.
