In a legal move, Smart Jaja, a Special Assistant in Akwa Ibom State, has taken the Nigerian Army, 6th Battalion, Ibagwa, to court for what is claimed to be wrongful arrest and detention. Jaja, along with several youths from Kampa Village, Eastern Obolo LGA, are seeking damages of five hundred million naira. The group alleges they were arrested, mistreated, and held without trial at the Army Barracks in Ibagwa. The incident reportedly occurred during a planned peaceful protest against oil and gas exploration activities. Through their legal representative, Ekemini Udim, the applicants are challenging the violation of their rights to freedom of movement and personal liberty as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution. They are also requesting a court order to assess their condition and that of others in custody, along with a sum of five hundred million naira in damages.
