Infant, three others die in Borno canoe accident

A tragic boat accident in Borno State claimed the lives of an adult, two children, and a five-month-old infant along the Maiduguri Road recently.

The incident occurred in the Bakassi community between Mafa and Dikwa, where a canoe carrying passengers was submerged by floodwaters, leading to the fatalities.

The victims were identified as Mallum Shettima, Maimuna Akura, Umira Bulama, and Yagana Kawu.

Authorities were alerted by a Good Samaritan at the Dikwa Divisional Police Headquarters, prompting a response to the distressing event.

After being rescued from the scene, the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were confirmed deceased by a medical professional.

The bodies were later handed over to their families for burial according to Islamic customs.

In light of the tragedy, the Police Public Relations Officer emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures for boat operators, highlighting the necessity of safety equipment like life jackets for passengers.

The official stressed the significance of prioritizing safety, especially in the wake of recent flooding incidents that have resulted in multiple fatalities.
