Nigeria has restated its dedication to building stronger international alliances and enhancing relationships with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, made this known at a key OACPS gathering during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA, with Angola presiding over the meeting.
In a statement by Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, Nigeria is strengthening its ties with OACPS members at the 79th UN General Assembly.
Shettima emphasized the importance of unity among member states in the face of global challenges, assuring Nigeria’s commitment to the organization’s objectives while also addressing domestic issues.
He stated, “Nigeria continues to be a key ally of OACPS, advocating for our shared values of democracy, diaspora involvement, and progress. Our presence at the UN General Assembly enables us to highlight these priorities globally and seek avenues for deeper cooperation.”
During the meeting, the VP tackled Nigeria’s recent listing as a high-risk jurisdiction for anti-money laundering concerns, aiming to clarify the situation and engage in constructive discussions with international partners.
He reiterated Nigeria’s backing for OACPS endeavors, including the focus on Haiti’s crisis, acknowledging Kenya’s deployment of 400 troops to Haiti while underscoring Nigeria’s historical role in South-South collaboration.
“Our technical aid corps initiative, which dispatches educators and healthcare professionals to the Caribbean, showcases Nigeria’s commitment to uplifting fellow OACPS nations,” VP Shettima remarked.
The former Borno State Governor outlined Nigeria’s approach to leveraging its status as Africa’s most populous nation to advocate OACPS interests, push for equitable treatment in global financial systems, and fortify connections with developing and developed countries.
He mentioned, “We are representing Nigeria’s interests while also championing the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria aligns closely with the OACPS agenda. In today’s interconnected world, our success is intertwined with that of our partner nations.”
Earlier, the Secretary-General of OACPS, Georges Chikoti, praised Nigeria as “a driving force of the OACPS and a vital member state,” aiming to enhance cooperation with Nigeria and expressing appreciation for the country’s significant contributions.
Chikoti expressed confidence in the UN’s support for member states facing diverse challenges and stressed the importance of bolstering partnerships between OACPS members and the European Union, particularly in areas like environment, infrastructure, education, and business development.
