Concerns as assassins unleash terror on Enugu, kill popular state figures

Recent violent attacks targeting prominent individuals in Enugu State have raised concerns among residents about their safety and security.

The killing of Chief Stephen Aniagu, Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association, has particularly alarmed the community, with many questioning if this is a return to a darker time in the state’s history.

Over the past 20 months, at least six prominent figures have been brutally murdered in the state capital.

Chief Aniagu was gunned down on his way home from work, with his body discovered riddled with bullet wounds and his car missing.

While the motive behind the killing remains unknown, witnesses reported hearing gunshots before finding Chief Aniagu’s lifeless body.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Peter Mbah gave security agencies a 48-hour ultimatum to apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing that such heinous crimes would not go unpunished under his watch.

The Enugu State Police Command initiated an investigation into the incident, vowing to bring the assailants to justice.

Unfortunately, this killing follows a pattern of unresolved high-profile murders in the state, indicating a concerning trend of insecurity.

Community leaders and activists have called on the government to prioritize the security of all residents and ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

The resurgence of violence in the state has sparked fear and condemnation from various quarters, urging swift and effective measures to restore peace and security.

Addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from both the government and security agencies to protect lives and property and bring perpetrators to justice.
