‘Relocate to safe locations,’ Nigerians warned of flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has issued a warning to the public regarding the potential risks of flash floods and river overflows resulting from heavy rains. The agency’s Director-General, Umar Mohammed, stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to minimize the impact of possible flooding. He emphasized the necessity of citizens clearing drainages and gutters to facilitate water run-off. The prolonged rainfall has already caused severe flash floods in various parts of the country.

Umar reiterated the agency’s dedication to effective water resource management, stating that NIHSA will continue to monitor water levels in major rivers and tributaries, issuing flood warnings, alerts, and predictions. He highlighted a significant increase in the water levels of River Niger and Benue, indicating a critical situation. Residents along riverbanks were advised to relocate to safer areas to protect themselves and their belongings.

The Director-General emphasized the collaborative efforts between NIHSA, emergency response agencies, and the media to ensure the safety of lives and property nationwide. The overarching goal is to reduce the impact of floods, enhance food security, and promote resilience to flooding while advancing sustainable water resources management.

As the rainy season progresses, vigilance remains crucial. The NIHSA urges all citizens to stay informed, prepared, and vigilant during this period of heightened flood risk.
