Police threaten crackdown on October 1 protesters in Kano

The police in Kano State have issued a stern warning to residents, cautioning against engaging in any form of street protest. The Command emphasized its readiness to take decisive action against any individual or group found violating this directive. The warning was delivered by SP Abdullahi Haruna, the Command’s spokesperson, during the public parade of recently apprehended criminals at the Command’s headquarters in Bompai Kano.

Haruna highlighted the police’s determination to prevent a recurrence of the unrest witnessed in the state during recent protests. He assured the public of comprehensive security measures in place for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on October 1, 2024. Residents were urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, observe safety protocols, and respect the rights of others during the festivities.

Security arrangements have been finalized at strategic points within the state to preempt any security threats linked to rumored nationwide protests on October 1st. The police disclosed that 89 suspects were arrested for various crimes such as kidnapping, human trafficking, armed robbery, drug offenses, and forgery. Of these suspects, 53 have been charged to court, while investigations are ongoing for the remaining 36.

The Command’s proactive community engagements, intelligence-driven operations, and constant patrols have significantly reduced criminal activities in Kano State. This approach aligns with the directive of IGP Kayode Egbetokun on community-oriented and intelligence-led policing, enabling swift responses to emergencies and crime prevention. The police spokesperson emphasized the Command’s commitment to combating crime and upholding public safety.
