Abia to relocate illegal market, hunts fake drug dealers

The Abia State Government issued a stern warning to those involved in the production of counterfeit drugs and beverages, emphasizing the negative impact it has on the state’s reputation. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, conveyed this message after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. Plans for stringent enforcement measures in collaboration with security agencies were announced to curb these illicit activities.

Furthermore, efforts towards transforming Umuahia into a smart city were highlighted, with urban renewal projects and beautification initiatives being a key focus. One such initiative involves relocating the illegal Isigate market to Afara to alleviate congestion in the city center. The government has completed land acquisition for the new market, compensated landowners, and initiated the construction of a perimeter fence around the area.

The relocation aims to decongest Isigate, paving the way for a new bus terminal and other transportation and beautification projects in that area of the capital city. The government’s commitment to infrastructural development underscores its vision to enhance Umuahia’s urban landscape and overall appeal.
