The Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has shared his reform initiatives for the Nigerian Correctional Service. In a recent meeting with directorate heads in Abuja, Nwakuche highlighted the importance of teamwork, transparency, and innovation in driving the service forward.
Nwakuche’s plans include building on existing reforms and implementing new strategies to improve inmate rehabilitation, address overcrowding in correctional facilities, and enhance the welfare of correctional officers. He emphasized the need for collaboration, accountability, and dedication from all stakeholders to transform the service into a model of excellence focused on security, reformation, and offender reintegration.
During the meeting, directorate heads discussed ongoing projects, identified challenges, and pledged their support for Nwakuche’s vision. They committed to aligning their efforts with his leadership goals to drive positive change within the correctional system.
Nwakuche assured officers of his dedication to creating a secure and humane correctional environment and called for unwavering commitment from all personnel. His appointment as Acting Controller General was approved by President Bola Tinubu, effective December 15, 2024, following the retirement of the former Controller General, Haliru Nababa, who reached the statutory retirement age on December 13, 2024.
