The African Export-Import Bank is advocating for increased empowerment opportunities for African youths, highlighting the importance of the continent’s young population in shaping its future and global relevance. The bank’s president emphasized this during the 5th edition of a youth summit organized by the Grand Africa Initiative in Abuja, focusing on youth entrepreneurship and digital innovation.
The summit brought together youth representatives from 91 countries, government officials, development partners, and stakeholders to discuss the role of young people in driving economic and social transformation in Africa. With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25 years old, the youth were described as a dynamic force with the potential for growth and innovation.
Challenges such as limited access to education, skills training, and entrepreneurial opportunities were highlighted, underscoring the need for support and mentorship, particularly in digital infrastructure. A survey revealed that a significant percentage of young Africans are interested in starting businesses in the coming years, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and guidance.
The Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria also spoke at the summit, stressing the need for policies to empower youth entrepreneurship and leverage digital infrastructure to connect young entrepreneurs with global markets. The importance of reliable internet, mobile technology, and digital payment systems was emphasized for creating scalable solutions to local challenges.
The founder of the Grand Africa Initiative expressed pride in the organization’s efforts to empower African youths in entrepreneurship, innovation, and employability skills. Participants shared positive feedback, with one individual noting how previous summits and masterclasses had enhanced their skills and influenced their entrepreneurial endeavors.
