Again, fire destroys 15 rooms in Kwara

A fire broke out on Ejiba Street, off Kwara Stadium Road, in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, destroying 15 rooms. The incident, caused by negligence in handling a gas cooker, marked the second fire-related event attended to by the state fire service in Ilorin within a week.

According to a statement by a Principal Fire Officer and head of Media and Publicity of the state’s fire service, Hassan Adekunle, on Friday, March 7, 2025, at around 8:05 pm, the fire service responded to a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Ejiba Road, beside Ejiba Bridge. The fire crew managed to save 89 out of the 104 rooms in the storey building, with only 15 rooms affected by the fire.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire originated from an unattended gas cooker. This incident followed another fire outbreak on Wednesday in the Oke-Apomu area of Ilorin West LG, where seven rooms in a one-story building were destroyed by a fire caused by a gas cooker.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, stressed the importance of safety and cautioned against negligence in handling gas cookers. He highlighted that this was the second fire incident within a week related to gas cooker mishandling, urging the public to be vigilant.

The Kwara State Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive fire prevention and swift emergency response.
