A’Ibom group writes NOSDRA over fresh oil spill, demands clean up

In a recent development, a community organization known as the Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network has issued a plea to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to take action regarding an oil spill in the coastal communities. The group emphasized the importance of conducting fingerprinting of the spilt oil to identify the responsible international oil company promptly.

The organization, through a letter addressed to the Director-General of NOSDRA, highlighted the urgent need for the cleanup of the affected environment and an investigation into the cause and extent of the spill to prevent further damage. The letter, signed by the group’s President General and Secretary General, expressed solidarity with the impacted communities and their call for NOSDRA’s intervention.

Acknowledging the adverse effects of the spill on the coastal communities, the group commended the Director General for a visit to the affected areas, which restored confidence and hope among the affected farmers, fishermen, and business operators. The letter emphasized the recurring challenges faced by these communities due to oil spills, gas flaring, and pollution, leading to environmental degradation and health risks.

Furthermore, the organization stressed the need for NOSDRA to ensure that oil companies comply with regulations and international standards to prevent future incidents. They also emphasized the necessity of providing medical assistance, compensation, and conducting a thorough cleanup to alleviate the suffering of the affected individuals relying on farming and fishing for their livelihoods.
