The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, took action to enforce the expiration of third-party insurance policies. This led to a decrease in traffic on major roads in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, had instructed the police to start enforcing mandatory third-party insurance nationwide from February 1st, 2025. This measure aims to ensure road safety by ensuring that vehicle owners adhere to insurance requirements for the protection of themselves and others on the road.
Commissioner Azare conducted a meeting with stakeholders to explain the enforcement and warned that non-compliant vehicles would be impounded. After overseeing the compliance, he stated that the exercise went smoothly and that motorists in the state had followed the regulations. He emphasized the importance of having all necessary documents, including third-party insurance, to drive on Nigerian roads.
Azare urged motorists to obtain their third-party insurance to avoid vehicle impoundment, emphasizing that enforcement was ongoing. The directive from the IGP was necessitated to guarantee the road-worthiness of vehicles and compliance with national laws. The Commissioner stated that the enforcement would persist until all motorists complied, with non-compliant vehicles facing impoundment.
