The National Union of Electricity Employees has instructed all its employees to refrain from reporting to work following an incident that occurred at the headquarters of Ikeja Electric in Lagos. The union expressed concern over the attack on its members by Nigerian Air Force personnel. Due to the brutality and threat to life experienced, the union advised IKEDC staff to stay at home until further notice.
In a statement by the Acting General Secretary of the NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, the invasion of IKEDC by military personnel was strongly condemned. The union highlighted the need for safety and protection of its members in the workplace.
During the attack, journalists and staff were subjected to harassment, assault, and intimidation by the armed men who arrived in military and OP-MESA vehicles. The union indicated that it might consider suspending its services nationwide if the safety of its members is not guaranteed.
The NUEE demanded assurances from the relevant authorities, including the Management, Federal Ministry of Power, and Defence Ministry, to safeguard its members from such incidents in the future. The union called for accountability and medical treatment for those affected during the siege.
