Anti-corruption day: Ministry sets up youth help desk

In observance of the International Anti-Corruption Day, the Minister for Youth Development has introduced a Youth Help Desk to enable young people to report corruption cases and seek assistance. The announcement was made during an event at the UN House in Abuja with the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”.

The minister expressed concern over the high number of young individuals facing challenges in the justice system, emphasizing the Ministry’s aim to provide protection and support for every young Nigerian. He highlighted economic difficulties, limited opportunities, and weak institutional frameworks as factors contributing to youth involvement in criminal activities.

To address these pressing issues, the Ministry established the Nigerian Youth Help Desk as a direct link for young Nigerians to access support, report corruption, and seek justice. Additionally, a partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime was announced to combat drug abuse, especially among individuals aged 25-39.

The Country Director of the UNODC acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in the fight against corruption, citing a survey that revealed a significant portion of Nigerians, including youth, refusing to engage in bribery. He emphasized the importance of integrity and the increasing willingness to report corrupt practices.

Efforts to combat corruption were lauded, with an emphasis on the need for sustained action and the implementation of preventive measures for long-term success.
