Atiku, Afenifere knock police as court remands human rights lawyer, Farotimi

A prominent human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, was recently arrested and remanded by the police, leading to strong criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, Afenifere.

Farotimi was taken into custody on Monday by the Ekiti State police and brought to Ado Ekiti for charges related to defamation of character based on his book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”

In the book, Farotimi made allegations, including claims that a prominent lawyer compromised the integrity of the Supreme Court. He faces charges of cyberbullying and defamation, totaling 16 counts brought against him by the police.

Following an order from an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court for Farotimi’s remand until December 10, 2024, former Vice President Atiku condemned the arrest, likening it to tactics reminiscent of military dictatorship.

Atiku criticized the police’s involvement, labeling it as an attempt to suppress freedom of expression and an overreach of power.

Afenifere also expressed outrage at Farotimi’s remand, with their General Secretary arguing that bail should have been granted for the charge of defamation, considering the nature of the offense.

During the court proceedings, Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the charges, with his lawyer urging the court to consider bail, emphasizing his client’s longstanding legal career and health issues.
