Backbiters behind my kangaroo impeachment – Makinde’s ex-deputy

Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, recently shared insights into the circumstances surrounding his impeachment on July 18, 2022. He referred to the process as a “kangaroo” affair orchestrated by detractors within the government. In an interview, Olaniyan acknowledged having disagreements with Governor Seyi Makinde but attributed his ousting to individuals who conspired against him by spreading false information to tarnish his reputation.

Olaniyan mentioned that despite any personal differences, he and Governor Makinde had a normal relationship until the impeachment saga began. He highlighted how certain people in the government felt threatened by his presence and resorted to backbiting and undermining him to the governor. Some even confessed their involvement in his impeachment after the fact, revealing the political motivations behind his removal.

The allegations leveled against Olaniyan, including insubordination, misconduct, and financial irregularities, were deemed baseless by him. He likened the accusations to an attempt to unjustly discredit him and secure his dismissal as deputy governor. Olaniyan emphasized that loyalty and respect were integral values to him, citing his longstanding experience in government circles as evidence of his understanding of these principles.

Despite the impeachment ordeal, Olaniyan expressed no bitterness towards Governor Makinde and maintained a respectful demeanor towards him. He clarified that he harbored no ill will and had refrained from speaking negatively about the governor since his exit from office. Olaniyan concluded by affirming his peaceful departure and reiterated his cordial interactions with Governor Makinde whenever they crossed paths.
