The Benue State Government has enlisted the help of former servicemen and women in the state-owned security group called the “Benue State Civil Protection Guard.” The previous administration had set up the “Benue State Community Volunteer Guards” and “Livestock Guards” to enforce laws in the state. The current administration merged these two groups into one entity, now known as the “Benue State Civil Protection Guard.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, Chief Joseph Har, announced the involvement of ex-servicemen and women from various security agencies into the state security outfit to enhance the command structure. This move aims to improve discipline and professionalism among the operatives at different levels within the command structure.
Har emphasized the importance of experience from veterans in enhancing the capabilities of the operatives. A workshop was held with existing commanders, veterans, and operatives to facilitate knowledge sharing and skill development. The goal is to strengthen the efficiency and professionalism of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard through the guidance and expertise of retired military, police, and paramilitary personnel.
The integration of retirees and veterans as commanders is intended to mentor and support the existing commanders in upholding discipline and standards. The focus is on enhancing operational effectiveness, training on ethics, conduct, human rights, and other essential principles to empower the Benue State Civil Protection Guard to become a more effective security force in the state.
Additionally, a new unit called the ‘Civil Protection Guard Quick Rapid Squad’ has been established to undergo training and work alongside other security agencies to combat crime in Benue communities.
