Benue to rename state varsity after ex-gov Adasu

The government of Benue State has revealed plans to rename the State University, Makurdi, in honor of the late Rev Fr Moses Adasu, a former governor of the state. The announcement was made by the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, during the university’s combined convocation ceremony held on campus. Alia, who serves as the university’s visitor, disclosed that an executive bill has been sent to the state House of Assembly for the renaming of the institution to Reverend Father Moses Adasu University.

Rev Fr Moses Adasu, who was also a Catholic priest, established the university during his tenure as governor of the state from 1991 to 1992. In recognition of his contributions, the current administration seeks to rename the university in his honor. Additionally, the governor announced plans to establish a satellite campus in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, to provide access to university education for residents of Benue North East senatorial district.

Furthermore, the governor pledged to donate 500 computers to the university’s computer-based test center and offer 100 percent Master’s Degree scholarships to all graduates who achieved first-class degrees. He urged the graduates to uphold values of integrity and hard work, emphasizing the importance of making a positive impact on society. The governor also commended the university’s management for effective implementation of CEFTER and expressed intentions to collaborate with the World Bank to enhance economic growth and create job opportunities for youth by revitalizing local industries.

Addressing the graduating students, the governor encouraged them to explore agricultural opportunities and promised support through funding and free farm inputs. He emphasized the importance of engaging in farming to secure a sustainable livelihood rather than relying on scarce white-collar jobs.
