Bobrisky: NCoS awaits probe outcome, clarifies inmate admission process

The Nigerian Correctional Service is conducting an investigation into allegations concerning a convicted individual known for cross-dressing. The Deputy Controller of Corrections Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, mentioned the service’s focus on rehabilitation and safety for inmates during the admission process. The individual in question had been convicted for an offense and sentenced to jail time.

There have been claims made by a social media influencer about the individual spending their jail term in a private apartment and allegedly paying a sum of money to officials to drop charges. To address concerns over corruption and violations, the Federal Government established an independent panel to investigate. The panel will look into allegations of misconduct and inappropriate conduct within the correctional service, including claims about providing alternative accommodation for the convicted individual.

The service spokesperson emphasized the thorough assessment process that inmates undergo for security and rehabilitation purposes upon arrival at the facility. He explained the various evaluations conducted to ensure safe housing and effective rehabilitation, highlighting the importance of human rights principles in the approach. The admission board reviews each inmate’s information, conducts risk assessments, assesses needs, and considers responsivity issues before allocating a cell.

Regarding the specific case mentioned, the individual declared their gender as male during court proceedings and admission to the facility. The classification and security assessment determined the appropriate cell for the individual’s safety within the custodial center. The spokesperson also mentioned the ongoing investigation by the Minister of Interior’s committee to ascertain the accuracy of claims about the individual staying outside the custodial center. Until the investigation is concluded, further details on the situation will not be disclosed.
