Brazil announces Nigeria’s admission as BRICS partner country

The announcement of Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS alliance was made by Brazil.

Nigeria becomes the ninth partner country in BRICS, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

Brazil welcomed Nigeria’s decision, highlighting Nigeria’s status as Africa’s largest economy and the continent’s most populous nation, aligning with BRICS’ interests in South-South cooperation and global governance reform.

The BRICS alliance, originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, began expanding to include more countries seeking to join the group of leading emerging economies.

The partner-country category was established at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024, with Nigeria reportedly joining during that summit.
