During the latest session of the trial involving the leader of a separatist group, the judge at the Federal High Court in Abuja announced her decision to step down from the case. This decision came after the defendant requested in court for the judge to recuse herself due to alleged failure to adhere to orders from the Supreme Court.
The term “recuse” was explained as the act of a judge declining to preside over a case due to a conflict of interest or other valid reasons. The defendant, facing charges related to terrorism, expressed a lack of confidence in the court and insisted on the judge stepping aside.
In response to the defendant’s request, the judge agreed to recuse herself and mentioned that the case file would be returned to the Chief Judge for reassignment. Despite the prosecution’s attempt to continue with the trial, the judge stood by her decision to recuse herself from the case.
During the proceedings, the defendant directed his lawyer to stop arguing and raised concerns about the court’s failure to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. The judge’s decision to recuse herself was final, concluding the session.
