By-elections to replace Ifeanyi Ubah, others may hold January

The Independent National Electoral Commission is set to conduct by-elections to fill the vacant seats of four National Assembly members who passed away in 2024. The by-elections are scheduled for January 2025. Since the beginning of the 10th Assembly in June 2023, the Assembly has lost four members: Ekene Adams, Musiliudeen Akinremi, Isa Dogonyaro, and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Dogonyaro, a member of the APC representing the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency of Jigawa State in the House of Representatives, passed away in Abuja on May 10, 2024, after battling an undisclosed illness. Adams, who represented Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State under the Labour Party, died on July 16, 2024, at the age of 39. Akinremi, a two-term member representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State, passed away on July 10, 2024. Ubah, who represented Anambra South, died in London on June 28, 2024.

An official from the commission has confirmed that the by-elections will be held in January 2025 to fill the vacant seats left by the deceased National Assembly members. By-elections were previously conducted on February 3, 2024, in nine constituencies to fill seats that were vacant due to the passing or resignation of members elected during the 2023 General Election. These by-elections took place in nine states across different Senatorial Districts, Federal Constituencies, and State Constituencies.

The INEC spokesperson, Sam Olumekun, declined to provide further comments when contacted about the upcoming by-elections.
