Chelsea vs Servette: Key facts ahead of Conference League clash

Chelsea, one of England’s top clubs in European football, is making a comeback in continental competition after a year’s break. They face Servette from Switzerland in a crucial play-off to secure a spot in the UEFA Conference League group stage. The first leg will be held at Stamford Bridge tonight.

This is only Chelsea’s third time encountering such a play-off under UEFA regulations, having successfully navigated similar challenges in the past. Servette, on the other hand, recently suffered a defeat in a Europa League play-off to Braga.

Servette’s best European performance dates back to the 1978/79 Cup Winners’ Cup when they reached the quarter-finals. Their last encounter with an English team was 50 years ago, resulting in a loss to Derby County.

Chelsea, known for their strong home record in Europe, will be without some key players for the match. The game also marks the European coaching debut of Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, who previously contributed to Manchester City’s Champions League success.

The second leg between Chelsea and Servette will take place in Geneva. The Conference League final is set for May 28, 2025, with the winner securing a spot in the following season’s Europa League.

This match is only the third meeting between Chelsea and Servette historically. Chelsea has faced Swiss opponents in Europe on six occasions, boasting a higher UEFA coefficient compared to Servette.
