Conservators film chimpanzee in Ekiti forest

In a remarkable achievement for wildlife conservation, the South-West/Niger Delta Forest Project recently captured groundbreaking footage of a chimpanzee in the Ise Forest Conservation Area of Ekiti State. The video, filmed from the treetops, showcases a male chimpanzee foraging in the lush forest. Rachel Ikemeh, the Project Director, emphasized that this milestone is the culmination of four years of dedicated conservation work, highlighting the ongoing need to protect endangered species and their habitats.

Despite facing threats like land encroachment and illegal plantations, the conservation efforts in the area have persevered. Ikemeh praised the collaborative efforts of SWNDF, the Ekiti State government, and the local community for their commitment to safeguarding the chimpanzees. She also emphasized the unique genetic traits of the chimpanzee population in the Ise forest, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts to preserve their distinct heritage.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji and community leaders were commended for their support in protecting Ekiti’s forests and wildlife. The establishment of the Ise Forest Conservation Area in 2021, under the foresight of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, was crucial in preventing the loss of wildlife and habitat in the region. The recent success in conserving the Ise forest, despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects the dedication and resilience of the conservation team.

The Ise Forest Conservation Area, spanning 3,300 hectares, was officially gazetted in 2021 after years of surveys revealed the presence of a genetically distinct and endangered chimpanzee population. The South-West/Niger Delta Forest Project, a grassroots conservation organization, played a pivotal role in this achievement. This historic footage not only signifies a significant step in safeguarding the future of chimpanzees but also contributes to preserving the rich biodiversity of southwestern Nigeria.
