Construction workers slam Umahi over policy u-turns, project terminations

The Federation of Construction Industry has expressed concerns regarding the inconsistent policies of the Minister of Works and urged him to avoid politicizing the profession. The FOCI President highlighted issues such as the imposition of contract prices and abrupt termination of projects due to funding shortages, which he deemed as violations of standard contract terms. The President also noted the negative impact of policy changes by the Minister, leading to layoffs in the sector.

The National President of the Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for the Minister to address the issue of employee dismissals. The frustration was palpable as attempts to engage with the Minister were met with silence, raising questions about accessibility and adherence to contractual agreements.

Similarly, the President of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction Furniture and Wood Workers voiced disappointment over the Minister’s insistence on concrete roads and fluctuating policies, resulting in job losses and precarious working conditions for industry workers. The call for regularizing workers to ensure proper conditions and protection was emphasized as a crucial issue that warrants immediate attention.
