The Federal Government recently announced plans to convert vehicles from using fuel to gas in order to reduce transportation costs and ultimately lower the cost of living for the general population. This initiative was launched in Benin, Edo State, with the aim of targeting one million vehicles nationwide for conversion, at no expense to the vehicle owners.
The Head of Commercial of the Presidential CNG Initiative emphasized that the project is part of efforts to alleviate the hardships caused by the continuous rise in petrol prices. By incentivizing commercial vehicles to convert to gas, the government hopes to ease the strain on petrol supply and decrease transportation expenses, thereby benefitting the masses.
The initiative, which has also been rolled out in five other states, is a significant step towards achieving a more affordable cost of living. President Tinubu’s directive to convert one million vehicles across the country underscores the government’s commitment to providing cost-saving solutions to the public.
To regulate the program effectively, a Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System has been established through collaboration between Pi-CNG and various regulatory bodies. This system aims to ensure the smooth implementation and monitoring of the conversion process.
The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves to reduce the nation’s reliance on oil. By promoting the use of gas as a more sustainable alternative, the government aims to capitalize on Nigeria’s gas resources and curb wastage through flaring.
Collaboration and support from state governments and stakeholders are crucial for the success of this initiative. Edo State, for instance, has already initiated its own program to encourage the adoption of alternative fuels among its citizens, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
