A senator from Kogi Central, who has been suspended, was able to obtain a court order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting a recall petition from her constituency. Efforts to recall the senator gained momentum as more groups in her area supported the process. This development occurred after she was suspended from the Senate due to a disagreement with the Senate President over seating arrangements. Despite constituents initiating the recall process, INEC initially claimed to be unaware of it.
The Federal High Court in Lokoja granted an interim injunction on Thursday, prohibiting INEC from receiving or acting on any recall petition against the senator until further notice. The court’s decision followed an urgent application supported by an affidavit from registered voters in her district. The case has been adjourned to May 6, 2025, for updates on the service of court documents and further proceedings.
The court order restrains INEC from processing any recall petitions containing false information about the senator until the motion is resolved. The document also mandates the defendant to be served with the court order and other relevant filings. The next court date is set for May 6, 2025, for progress report and additional discussions.
