In Abeokuta, Ogun State, a Special Anti-Cultism Court sentenced a 35-year-old individual named Timileyin Afolayan to 10 years in prison for the unlawful possession of firearms and an additional seven years for being a member of a secret cult. Afolayan, residing in Lagos State, was found guilty of being part of an unlawful society and having a locally made pistol without a license. The Magistrate, Mr. O.L. Oke, determined that the evidence presented by the prosecution proved Afolayan’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Afolayan was handed a seven-year prison term for the first count and ten years for the second count of possessing the unlicensed pistol. The Magistrate specified that the sentences would run concurrently without the option of a fine. The police prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, disclosed that Afolayan committed the offense in October 2023 in Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta. Afolayan was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation where a pistol was discovered in his possession without the required permit. Afolayan confessed to being a member of the secret cult group known as the Alora Confraternity, which violated specific laws in Ogun State and the Firearms Act of Nigeria.
