An Imo State High Court in Owerri has issued a restraining order against the Imo State Government to halt the demolition of the Owerri Central Market complex. The court order prevents any further demolition or eviction of occupants from the market property. Failure to comply with the court order could result in contempt of court charges.
The case, identified as suit number HOW/882/2024, involves a dispute over the ownership of the Central Market Layout in Owerri. The plaintiffs, including Rhema Life Ministry International and other entities, have challenged the state government and Governor Hope Uzodimma’s claims to the property.
The plaintiffs’ legal representative emphasized the importance of upholding the court order and urged the state government to refrain from any actions that could interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings. The next court session is scheduled for January 23, 2025, for further deliberation on the matter.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Lands and Urban Development regarding the issue were unsuccessful, as some staff members declined to comment, citing a lack of authorization to discuss the matter.
