Experts within the agricultural sector are emphasizing the need for urgent policy changes, increased investments, and technological advancements to enhance Nigeria’s food system.
At a recent gathering in Abuja, various stakeholders including agricultural specialists, policymakers, and development partners came together for the National Stakeholder Dialogue on Food Security to address the prevalent issue of food insecurity affecting millions of Nigerians.
The event, themed “Achieving Food Security in Nigeria: Bridging the Gap,” served as a platform for participants to delve into the systemic challenges facing food production, distribution, and accessibility.
Key obstacles highlighted by experts include climate change, inadequate infrastructure, and the limited financial resources accessible to small-scale farmers, all hindering efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency in the country.
Notably, the Country Director of One Acre Fund, Adetola Adegbite, emphasized the necessity for comprehensive solutions, underscoring that despite Nigeria’s agricultural capabilities, food insecurity remains a pressing issue.
The discussion also stressed the importance of bridging the gap between agricultural research and practical implementation to ensure that innovative solutions reach grassroots farmers effectively.
Participants urged the government to implement policies that promote private-sector investments, enhance rural infrastructure, and incorporate climate-smart agricultural practices into national development strategies.
Furthermore, stakeholders highlighted the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, who play a significant role in the country’s food production but lack access to quality resources, financial support, and stable markets.
In conclusion, participants committed to taking actionable steps to strengthen agricultural value chains, foster partnerships among governmental bodies, private investors, and rural farmers, and work towards sustainable solutions to ensure long-term food security for Nigeria’s growing population.
Despite warnings of a deepening food crisis if immediate measures are not taken to address the situation, experts expressed optimism that through appropriate investments and policy adjustments, Nigeria can harness its agricultural potential and secure a stable food supply for the future.
