Cross River lawmakers pass LG amendment bill

The 2025 Local Government Amendment Bill was recently passed into law by the Cross River State House of Assembly. The bill, which underwent thorough deliberations by various committees, aims to make significant changes to the local government system. It harmonizes and repeals previous laws to bring clarity and efficiency to the third tier of government.

One of the key highlights of the bill is the elevation of Heads of Local Government Administration to the status of Permanent Secretaries, aligning them with their counterparts in the State Civil Service. The financial provisions for the Auditor-General for Local Government are also included to enhance operational efficiency.

Furthermore, the bill increases the number of departments in local government and adjusts the allocation of funds to various key MDAs for better efficiency. Vice Chairmen of Councils will now have added responsibilities covering humanitarian affairs, peace and conflict resolution, border and boundary issues, and sports.

The bill also emphasizes the importance of reflecting federal character in all appointments into Executive Councils, strengthening key offices within the local government structure, and establishing criteria for various appointments and roles. The lawmakers reviewed and discussed the amendments extensively before passing the bill, ensuring that it addresses contemporary issues and benefits citizens at the grassroots level.

The Speaker of the House commended the Joint Committee and all lawmakers for their dedication and efforts in ensuring the swift passage of the bill.
