Customs uncover 2,280 wraps of cannabis concealed in sawdust

In a recent operation conducted by the Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigerian Customs Service, a significant seizure was made. A total of 2,280 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, weighing 1824kg, were intercepted. The illicit substance was cleverly hidden within over 200 sacks of sawdust, concealed in a six-tyre DAF truck traveling along the Ilero axis of Oyo State.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer and Superintendent of Customs, Kayode Wey, shared that the operation, orchestrated by Dr. Ben Oramalugo, took place on Wednesday, August 14. This endeavor is part of the Command’s comprehensive strategy to combat the smuggling of harmful substances into the country and underscores their dedication to safeguarding public health and safety.

Dr. Oramalugo commended the vigilance and professionalism displayed by the Command’s officers in uncovering the illicit cargo. Despite the smugglers’ attempts to disguise the Cannabis Sativa, the thorough inspection of the truck led to its discovery. The interception was a result of intelligence gathered by one of the Command’s anti-smuggling units.

He emphasized the commitment of the Command to prevent illegal substances from infiltrating society, particularly due to the detrimental impact of Cannabis Sativa on public health, especially among the youth. Once approved by the Service Headquarters, the seized substance will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and disposal in accordance with the law.

Dr. Oramalugo urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or smuggling to the nearest Customs office or law enforcement agency. He stressed the collective responsibility in the fight against drug smuggling and assured continued efforts by the Command to combat all forms of illegal trade to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens.

In conclusion, Dr. Oramalugo reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, to protect the nation’s borders and the public from the risks posed by smuggling and the distribution of illicit substances.
