The representative for Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, praised the commencement of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) production by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. This development is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on petrol imports, thereby positively impacting the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
The Dangote refinery started producing petrol on September 3, 2024, marking a significant milestone as Nigeria had not locally produced petrol in 28 years. Despite being a major oil producer globally, Nigeria has struggled with petrol imports, affecting its foreign exchange reserves.
With a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, the Dangote refinery, which is the largest in Africa, is poised to meet the demands of the West African market efficiently.
The lawmaker, who is an engineer, previously criticized efforts to hinder the refinery’s operations and called for the removal of the NMDPRA CEO over unfavorable comments. He commended Dangote for this achievement, emphasizing the refinery’s potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s economy.
By ending the country’s reliance on fuel imports, the Dangote refinery is expected to boost foreign exchange reserves, create jobs, and enhance the petroleum sector’s value chain. The lawmaker congratulated Aliko Dangote for this significant milestone in PMS production, highlighting its positive impact on Nigeria’s economic landscape.
The refinery’s ability to produce high-quality petrol domestically will reduce import dependence, conserve foreign exchange reserves, and promote economic stability, aligning with Nigeria’s objectives of economic diversification and industrial advancement.
Furthermore, besides the immediate economic advantages, the refinery’s operation is anticipated to generate employment opportunities, support local industries, and contribute to national infrastructure development.
