The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that a tragic incident occurred when a boat capsized on River Benue, resulting in the loss of 20 lives. The spokesperson for the state command, Catherine Anene, revealed that 11 individuals were rescued, and efforts are ongoing to save others.
Reports indicate that the passengers were returning from Ocholonya market in Agatu LGA of Benue State to their destination in Nasarawa State when the unfortunate accident happened. Witnesses shared that over 20 people, mostly women and children, were onboard the boat when it overturned.
Local officials, including the Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin James, corroborated the incident, expressing condolences to the families affected. Conflicting reports suggest varying information regarding the number of casualties, with efforts being made to ascertain the accurate details.
The chairman mentioned reaching out to the Nigeria Navy commander in the area to assist in the ongoing rescue operations. The community is mourning the loss of lives in this heartbreaking event as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
