Delta woman accuses police of alleged N2.186m extortion

Mrs Gladys Ubogu Okeoghene, a resident of Afiesere community in Ughelli, Delta State, has raised concerns over alleged extortion by certain police officers in the Delta State Command. In a petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, she detailed how she was reportedly coerced into paying N2.186m. Her petition, also sent to the International Human Rights Commission and the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights, recounted the incident involving the theft of her family’s two cars in 2022. The mechanic entrusted with the vehicles reportedly sold them and fled, prompting Mrs Okeoghene to seek police assistance. Despite complying with the demands for payment, she claims that one of the recovered vehicles was not released and additional payments were requested. The petitioner also expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the case and alleged intimidation by the Investigating Police Officer. The situation has sparked discussions on police integrity and accountability in Nigeria, with calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct. In response, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer mentioned that arrests were made and one vehicle was recovered, but complications arose when evidence emerged suggesting the vehicles were sold by the petitioner’s son. The case underscores the ongoing challenges of police malpractice and the need for appropriate action and oversight.
