The family court division of Delta State High Court, Ughelli Division, has started proceedings in a case concerning a 15-year-old school girl who was allegedly trafficked by her mother for child sex exploitation. The case was brought to court by a child rights activist based in Delta State. During the court session, Justice Mary Gesikeme-Akebotah appointed the proprietress of Triumphal Model School, Effurun, Mrs. Magareth Oghuvwu, as a guardian for the child until the main case is heard. The judge also instructed the court bailiff to serve all necessary documents to the Delta State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission and the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police through a registered courier. Additionally, the judge issued an interim order prohibiting all involved parties from taking any further actions in the case until the main suit is resolved. The case has been adjourned to Friday, December 13, 2024.
Previously, it was reported that the mother of the victim allegedly took her to a sex trafficker at Beeland Hotel. The victim managed to escape and sought refuge at her school proprietress’ house.
