The Defence Headquarters has issued a warning to communities in Northern Nigeria against engaging in peace agreements with bandits and terrorists for protection. The military clarified that it is not aware of such arrangements and does not support them.
During a briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations emphasized the military’s stance on these reported peace deals. Despite some communities opting for negotiations with armed groups due to a lack of confidence in security agencies, the military disavowed any involvement or endorsement of such agreements.
The military remains committed to following established rules and procedures in its operations, ensuring the protection of lives and critical infrastructure from criminal elements. Recent military operations have resulted in the neutralization of terrorists, the arrest of individuals involved in oil theft, and the recovery of a cache of weapons.
Troops in the South-South region successfully thwarted oil theft activities amounting to millions of Naira. Additionally, they discovered and dismantled numerous illegal oil refining sites and equipment. Moreover, a significant number of weapons, including rifles and ammunition, were confiscated during these operations.
In a positive development, a group of rehabilitated individuals, including adult males, females, and children, were handed over to the Borno State Government. The surrender of terrorists and their families to troops within the theatre of operation reflects the ongoing success of military efforts in the region.
Addressing concerns about military personnel’s conduct, the Defence Headquarters spokesperson reiterated the military’s commitment to discipline and professionalism. Any reports of misconduct are investigated and dealt with accordingly, with punishments ranging from disciplinary actions to dismissals depending on the severity of the offense.
