The Ebonyi government has made it clear that beneficiaries of its overseas scholarship scheme must not defect once they depart for the United Kingdom at the end of September. The chairman of the state scholarship board, Chief Chaka Nweze, emphasized this during a meeting with the 263 beneficiaries. Nweze stated that the beneficiaries would be required to sign a bond with the government to ensure they stay committed to their studies in the UK and return to serve Ebonyi for at least five years after completion.
The government has invested significantly in the scheme, with beneficiaries selected from all 13 LGAs of the state. Approximately N3 billion has been spent on the national scholarship scheme, covering tuition fees and living expenses for the students. An additional N9 billion has been allocated for the overseas scholarship, including expenses for flights, visas, and academic pursuits at partnered universities.
The beneficiaries are currently undergoing preparations such as acquiring passports, visas, and meeting health requirements. Prof. Humphrey Nwaobashi, a board member, urged the students to represent the state well and fulfill the objectives of their scholarship. The beneficiaries have a year to complete their programs, during which their progress will be closely monitored and reported back to the state governor.
One beneficiary, Miss Chika Onele, expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the governor to enhance their education and promised to make the most of the investment made in their future.
