Edo panel promises fairness in Obaseki govt probe

The head of the Edo State Assets Verification Committee, Ernest Umakhihe, clarified that the panel’s purpose is not to conduct a witch-hunt.

The committee is currently examining the records of the previous administration led by ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Umakhihe emphasized that the committee’s focus is on ensuring accuracy and accountability in executing its responsibilities. He stated, “We will be scrutinizing the budget; determining responsibilities and locations.”

Speaking to reporters at the Government House in Benin after being inaugurated by Governor Monday Okpebholo, Umakhihe said, “We are delving into both financial and non-financial aspects of governance.”

A committee member, Prince Kassim Afegbua, echoed the commitment to thoroughness, noting that asset verification is a common practice globally.

Afegbua added, “Comprised of individuals with strong backgrounds in governance, legislation, and finance, the committee will meticulously review claims and figures.”

“Our government’s swift actions in the initial 14 days have earned the trust of the people of Edo. Specific individuals will be summoned before the panel, and fairness will prevail,” Afegbua concluded.
