Edo poll: Group urges INEC to conduct free, fair exercise

A group advocating for civil rights, known as Talakawas, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure a transparent, free, and fair governorship election in Edo State to prevent potential political unrest. They have also called on the police to uphold their duties in safeguarding voters and stakeholders during the electoral process in compliance with the constitution and the Police Act.

The President of Talakawas parliament, Kola Edokpayi, emphasized the importance of providing adequate security to allow voters to cast their votes without fear. Edokpayi expressed concern about the proliferation of weapons in the state and urged security forces to disarm those unlawfully possessing firearms promptly.

Furthermore, Edokpayi cautioned against inciting violence by certain politicians and stressed the transient nature of power. He emphasized that elections should not be a cause for conflict but an opportunity for peaceful democratic participation. He discouraged the use of weapons for violence and called for peaceful conduct during the upcoming election.

Edokpayi encouraged eligible voters with Permanent Voter Cards to turn out in large numbers and participate in the election scheduled for September 21.
