The report by the Nigerian Bar Association Election Working Group on the Edo State governorship elections held on September 21, 2024, highlighted logistical challenges, low voter turnout, and attempted vote buying. Despite these issues, the group commended the conduct of voters and security personnel, describing the process as mostly peaceful.
The NBA deployed observers to various polling units across Edo State, including representatives from different NBA branches in the state to ensure comprehensive coverage. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the winner of the election as Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress.
The report also mentioned delays in the deployment of election materials and personnel in some areas, impacting the voting process. Despite these delays, the election was generally peaceful with adequate security provided by various agencies.
Voter turnout was low, with concerns about the number of accredited voters compared to registered voters in some polling units. The group acknowledged the resilience of certain voters who overcame challenges like heavy rains to cast their ballots.
The NBA-EWG also reported instances of attempted vote buying by political party agents. However, they praised the professionalism of INEC officials and the functionality of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System.
In their recommendations, the NBA-EWG suggested improvements in the timely distribution of materials and increased voter education to enhance public trust in the electoral process. They also called for stricter measures to reduce the influence of money in elections to uphold the integrity of the electoral system.
