Education ministry dismisses reports on scrapping JSS, SSS

The Ministry of Education has clarified that the proposal for a 12-year basic education system was presented for discussion and is not an immediate policy change. The aim is to maintain the current 6-3-3 structure while removing the examination barrier between Junior and Senior Secondary School. This proposal will undergo further review and consultation before any final decision is made. Stakeholder engagements will be conducted over the next eight months to gather input from education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other relevant parties. The final decision on adopting this reform will be made at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025. The ministry emphasizes that there is no truth to claims that Junior and Senior Secondary School have been eliminated and reaffirms the government’s commitment to enhancing quality education.
