Educationists advocate support for school sports development

In the realm of education, there has been a collective call from school owners and education experts to emphasize the importance of school sports within primary and secondary education. The focus is on garnering support, both public and private, to nurture sports talent among students for the benefit of the nation’s athletic potential and overall human capital growth.

During the recent Biennial Inter House Sports Competition at Subtle Kids School in Akute, Ogun State, the school’s proprietress, Oluwatoyin Latunde, highlighted the need for external sponsorship to boost the development of school sports. She emphasized that schools alone cannot provide the necessary resources and infrastructure to fully explore and enhance students’ sporting abilities. Latunde urged for a collaborative effort between the ministries of education and sports to ensure the availability of sports facilities and competitions aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents.

The event saw participants showcasing their sporting skills with Blue House emerging as the victors, securing 26 medals. Red House followed closely with 24 medals, Green House with 22 medals, and Yellow House with 10 medals. The competition included various races, with Favour Happiness clinching the Best Athlete of the year award. The event also featured guest schools in relay races and drew a supportive crowd of parents and well-wishers.

The success of school sports hinges on strategic support and a concerted effort from stakeholders to create a conducive environment for students to excel in sports alongside their academic pursuits. The event underscored the significance of nurturing young talent and fostering a culture of sportsmanship within educational institutions.
